A Close One Lost in the 8th

Cotuit, MA- In the third meeting of the Hyannis Mets and Cotuit Kettleers, Cotuit squeezed out a victory in a late inning comeback. The final score was 2-1.

The game was destined to be a pitcher's duel, with Chad Bell (Walter State JC, 1-0) on the mound for Cotuit and Cole Johnson (Notre Dame, 1-1) starting for Hyannis. Both pitchers averaged a strikeout per inning in their previous outings and Bell had yet to give up an earned run. Not to mention, both teams have exceptional team ERA's (Cotuit, 2.11; Hyannis, 2.75)

Bell allowed the first run of the game shortly after attempting to pick off Crawford (UAB) on first base. He threw over multiple times and that didn't stop Crawford from taking second when Bell finally did throw to the plate. Crawford scored on a single by Harrington (East Carolina). Bell came out in the 5th, pitching 4.1 innings, recording 3 strikeouts and a run on 3 hits.

Johnson first ran into trouble in the bottom of the 5th. He walked the leadoff batter, Patterson (Auburn), who advanced to third on a single by Plagman (Georgia Tech). Cory Vaughn struck out and Rowland grounded to the pitcher who caught Patterson going for home. With 2 outs and a full count, Bisson (Kentucky) singled to drive in the tying run, Plagman.

Johnson was relieved after 6 innings pitched. He stuck out 8 and allowed 1 run on 4 hits. At this point in the game, neither starting pitcher could snag a win.

After a series of pitching changes in the middle innings, Ben Rowen (Virginia Tech) closed out the game. He inherited two runners in the top of the 7th, but disposed of three straight batters with his submarined style delivery. Rohan, Burkhart and Soto went down swinging for the Mets.

In the Bottom of the 8th, Eric Maust (Notre Dame) gave up a single to Rowland and proceeded to walk Rico Noel. Kevin Moran came in to pitch for Hyannis and with two runners aboard and one out, he deflected a hard ground ball off his glove which made the ball out of reach for the second baseman Crawford. That could have been an inning ending double play and instead Rowland scored from second as the ball dribbled into shallow right field.  That was the winning run and the loss was accredited to Maust (0-1). The Hyannis Mets went down without a fight in the top of the ninth. Rowen was rewarded the win.

Mets defeat Falmouth 3-2 in 12-Inning Thriller

HYANNIS - The Hyannis Mets continued their recent hot streak Saturday afternoon by defeating the Falmouth Commodores 3-2 in 12 innings. Hyannis (5-5) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning when Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) began a two-out rally with a single to right-center field. Following a walk and an error to load the bases, Kenny Swab (Young Harris) struck out, but the ball got by Falmouth catcher John Nester, allowing Cuneo to score the winning run from third.

Mets Pitcher Chris Haney (Dallas Baptist) came on in the bottom of the 12th to lock down the save, but allowed a one-out double to put the tying run in scoring position. Haney recovered to strike out Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt) and get Brian Fletcher (Auburn) to ground out to end the game.

The Mets were originally leading 5-1 in the fifth inning before Falmouth came back to score four runs in the final three innings, including the game-tying tally with two outs in the ninth inning. Cody Hawn (Tennessee) provided much of the offense for Hyannis, crushing a homer to right field in the fourth and adding a RBI single in the seventh. In the top of the 10th inning, Hawn, who leads the Mets with two homers and six RBI in only six games, fouled a ball of his leg and needed to be carted off the field.

Seth Rosin started on the mound for Hyannis and allowed only one run on four hits in five innings while striking out seven. Dallas Gallant (Sam Houston) picked up the win in relief for the Mets as he pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit.

The Mets will resume play Sunday night as they hit the road to take on the Cotuit Kettleers at 5 p.m.

Hyannis Shutout in Rain-Shortened Game

HYANNIS - The rain came at an inopportune time for the Mets tonight. In the bottom of the sixth inning, with two men in scoring position lightning filled the sky and play was stopped. After a half hour delay it was called an official game resulting in a Hyannis loss. The loss snapped a three game win streak for Hyannis.

The weather was not the story of this game, however. Harwich starter Rob Gariano (Fairfield) produced the most dominant pitching performance Hyannis has faced this year. Gariano threw five and a third innings of shutout ball, striking out ten batters and allowing only three hits. He established his fastball early, working in an effective changeup and a great curveball. The only trouble he ran into was in the sixth inning when unfortunately for the Mets, the game was called. He allowed back to back singles to Elliot Soto (Creighton) and Trent Whitehead (East Carolina) who advanced to second and third base on a Nick Crawford (UAB) sacrifice bunt. With the Mets number three hitter Cody Hawn (Tennessee) stepping to the plate, the lightning and rain bailed out Gariano right on cue. Although the way Gariano was going on this night, he may not have needed it.

Hyannis starter Austin Hudson (Central Florida) takes the loss tonight. Hudson allowed three runs and scattered six hits through six innings. He allowed two runs in the second inning when he hit the Mariners' Phil Gosselin (Virginia) and walked second baseman Levi Michael (UNC). Gosselin scored from third base when David Herbeck (James Madison) grounded to third baseman Dustin Harrington whose throw was dropped by Dan Burkhardt, the catcher. Michael then came around to score on a Marcus Nidiffer (Kentucky) single making it 2-0 Harwich. The Mariners would score a third run in the sixth inning on a Levi Michael RBI single.

Hyannis looks to avoid the rain and losing two straight at Falmouth tomorrow night.

Rohan Single Gives Mets Thrilling 3-2 Win

HYANNIS - Yes, the Hyannis Mets do still remember how to play baseball. Following a week that included four consecutive rainouts, the Mets needed a two-out ninth-inning single from Eddie Rohan (Winthrop) to complete a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against the Cotuit Kettleers. With the win, the Mets (4-4) have now won three straight games and are tied for second in the Western Division.

Entering the top of the ninth inning with the score deadlocked at two, Dustin Harrington's (East Carolina) walk set the stage for Rohan's game-winning hit. After Harrington advanced to second on a wild pitch, Rohan, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the fifth, lined a single to left-center field, scoring Harrington as the Hyannis dugout emptied to meet the go-ahead run at home plate. Rohan's single was the only hit Cotuit reliever Ben Rowen allowed in his four innings of work.

Hyannis pitcher Kevin Brandt (East Carolina) picked up the win, along with multiple huge outs in his two and two-thirds innings. Brandt produced a much-needed double-play ground out to end the seventh inning with the Kettleers still looking for the go-ahead run. In the eighth, Brandt recieved the defensive support all pitchers dream of. Mets' Catcher Kenny Swab (Young Harris) threw out Cody Stanley trying to steal second and with two outs, second baseman Nick Crawford (UAB) gunned down pinch-runner Mike Nesseth at the plate to end the inning. Then in the ninth, Brandt struck out the final two hitters of the game with Cotuit having a runner in scoring position.

Hyannis originally tied the game in the fifth inning on Trent Whitehead's (East Carolina) sacrifice fly and a Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) single. Cody Hawn (Tennessee) contributed two hits to the Mets' offense, including a double in the fourth inning.

Jay Brown (South Carolina) and Dallas Gallant (Sam Houston) also pitched for Hyannis. Brown started the game and gave up two runs in five innings. Gallant pitched a scoreless inning and a third and has now allowed only one run this season in eight innings of relief.

The Mets will be back in action Friday night at McKeon Park at 7 p.m. against Harwich.

Home Game Called After 1 Inning of Play

HYANNIS - Tonight's Met's (3-4) game against the Brewster Whitecaps (3-3) was called due to foul weather just before the start of the 2nd inning. Before the game, the few fans in attendance, along with Mets staff members were wondering if the competition would even start. The cold wind was making the light precipitation unbearable. However, decent field condition and a tight league schedule motivated the coaches and umpires to get the game going.

Seth Rosin (Minnesota) took the mound for the Mets. He got Brewster's lead off hitter, Tim Ferguson (Mississippi), to ground out. After walking a batter, Rosin struck out the next two for the final outs.

The Mets had a chance to score in the bottom of the inning. Lead off hitter, Trent Whitehead (East Carolina) reached base on a walk. During Whitehead's attempt to steal second he realized that the throw from Brewster’s catcher, Bryan Holady (TCU), was off target. Whitehead rounded second and easily reached third.

With one out, first baseman Cody Hawn (Tennessee) reached first after Brewster's pitcher, Matt Lujan (San Francisco, 0-1) snagged his ground ball and threw it too far off the bag. While Hawn was headed for first Whitehead was running home. Unfortunately, the ball made it there before he did and Whitehead was called out after sliding into the tag. Designated hitter, Ryan Cuneo (Delaware), struck out to end the inning.

The Mets will travel to Bourne tomorrow to take on the Braves. Their next home game is this Wednesday, June 24th against the Wareham Gateman. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.

Behind Starter Cole Johnson (Notre Dame), Hyannis Wins Their Second Straight.

HYANNIS - The Mets got off to a quick start tonight, taking advantage of early opportunities against Cotuit starter Justin Grimm (Georgia). Trent Whitehead (East Carolina) led off the bottom of the first with a walk. After Elliot Soto (Creighton) struck out, Cody Hawn (Tennessee) reached on an error by the second baseman. Following a passed ball, there were runners on second and third base. Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) found the right side with a ground ball to drive in the first run of the night. Jackie Bradley Jr. (South Carolina) then hit a two-out, line drive single to left to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Dustin Harrington (East Carolina) and Nick Crawford (UAB) were on first and second after each reached base with singles. After a double steal, Elliot Soto beat out a slow grounder to third for an infield hit. The throw would get away from first baseman Kevin Patterson (Auburn), allowing Harrington and a hustling Nick Crawford to come in to score all the way from second base.

Four runs would be more than enough for Cole Johnson on this night. Cole went seven innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six. Johnson had Cotuit batters off balance all night with a good fastball and a sharp breaking ball. He struck out the side in the second and retired seven batters in a row at one point.

The only blemish for Johnson was a solo home run allowed to Cotuit first baseman Kevin Patterson. The Kettleers also pick up a run in the ninth inning but it would not be enough as the Mets win it 4-2. Justin Grimm takes the loss for the Kettleers.

Barnstable's own Kevin Moran (Boston College) finished off the game earning a two inning save.

Hyannis takes on the Brewster Whitecaps at McKeon field tomorrow night.

Hyannis Offense Explodes in Win Over Falmouth

HYANNIS - After a slow offensive start to the 2009 season, the Mets' lineup finally came to life Thursday night as they mashed their first two home runs of the season and defeated the Falmouth Commodores 13-5 at McKeon Park.

Hyannis (2-4) took an early two-run lead in the first inning against Falmouth (1-4) starter Mitch Mormann (Des Moines CC) and blew the game open with a six-run second inning. Mormann struggled with his control, walking in a run to set the table for Cody Hawn (Tennessee), who then drilled Mormann's pitch for an opposite-field grand slam, the Mets' first homer of the season. After the bases cleared, Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) crushed Mormann's next pitch over the wall in right field, completing a six-run inning and giving Hyannis a commanding 8-0 lead.

The Mets received another strong pitching performance from Austin Hudson (Central Florida), who won his second consecutive start to begin the season. Hudson pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while recording seven strikeouts.

Falmouth cut into the lead with a five-run sixth inning, including a three-run blast from Murray Watts (Arkansas State) to make the score 11-5. The Mets' relief pitching of Will Weidig (Brown), Kevin Brandt (East Carolina) and Chris Haney (Dallas Baptist) would blank the Commodores for the remainder of the night.

Nick Crawford (UAB) and Dustin Harrington (East Carolina) contributed multi-hit games for the Hyannis offense. Crawford now leads the league in hitting with a .421 average through six games. Trent Whitehead (East Carolina) was on base three times with a double and two walks.

The Mets will be back in action Friday night against Harwich at Whitehouse Field.

Mets Drop Fourth Straight

Hyannis,MA-

Jaren Matthews (Rutgers) blasted a two-run shot in the top of the second inning and Elliot Glynn (1-0, UConn) pitched six solid innings of one-hit baseball as he earned his first win of the season and the Orleans Firebirds (1-4) cruised to a 2-0 victory over the Hyannis Mets (1-4).

Michael Olt (UConn) reached base with a single to lead of the second inning before Matthews hammered a two-run homerun 332 feet over the rightfield fence to open up the scoring in the second inning. They would prove the only two runs on the night for the either team as the Mets struggled at the plated tonight, never threatenig on the base paths at any point in the game as Firebird pitching dominated. The Mets were only able to must two hits on the night, with two batters reaching base on a walk and an error by Orleans. Glynn who started the game for the Firebirds pitched six strong innings for Orleans, giving up only one hit and striking out five. Daniel Ottone (Western Carolina) preserved the win for the Firebirds, picking up his first save of the season for Orleans.

Cold Night in Wareham Ends With Hyannis Loss

The Mets jumped on the board early in tonight's game at Wareham. A new look Mets lineup had Trent Whitehead (East Carolina) leading off the game and reaching base on a throwing error from Gatemen second baseman Ryan Pineda (Cal St. Northridge). Speedy Nick Crawford (UAB) followed with an infield hit putting runners on first and second until Whitehead showed some of his own speed stealing third base. The Mets number three hitter on this night, Eddie Rohan (Winthrop), grounded into a double play, with Whitehouse coming in the backdoor to give the Mets an early 1-0 lead.

That lead would last till the second inning when Cole Leonida (Georgia Tech) stepped to the plate with runners on the corners. Leonida lined his first hit of the season, an RBI double, down the third base line scoring Alex Dickerson (Indiana) and Jake Lemmerman (Duke), who came in when the ball was mishandled in Left by Met outfielder Jamal Austin (UAB). The inning would end with a great running catch in deep right from Jackie Bradley Jr. (South Carolina).

The Mets tied the game at 2 in the fourth inning with the help of some Wareham miscues. Jackie Bradley Jr. reached on an error by the shortstop. The very next pitch Bradley Jr. would go all the way to third when there was no one covering second base on his steal attempt. Two pitches later Bradley Jr. would score when the ball got by Leonida the catcher.

That would be all the scoring for Hyannis on this night. Starter Blake Monar (Indiana) held their bats in check through 5 1/3 innings surrendering just 2 runs, both of them unearned. Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) would pickup the win in relief, working the rest of the game allowing just two hits.

The Gatemen would take the lead for good in the bottom of the 8th on a hit and run single from outfielder Alex Dickerson (Indiana). Ryan Pineda, running on the play from first base, would score when the incoming throw got by Met third baseman Dustin Harrington (East Carolina).

A bright spot for the Mets tonight was Dallas Gallant throwing 3 scoreless innings, striking out five. Jackie Bradley Jr. also showed off his strong arm throwing out Wareham's Shea Vucinich trying to stretch a single into a double on a ball off the right field wall.

Hyannis returns to McKeon Park Tuesday night against Orleans.

Red Sox Edge Mets 3-1 in Pitchers Duel

Hyannis, MA:

The Hyannis Mets (1-2) lost to the Y-D Red Sox (3-0) 3-1 in a well fought pitchers duel on a gorgeous June night at McKeon Park in Hyannis. Darrin Campbell(U. San Diego, 1-0) picked up the win for the Red Sox, as Kevin Moran (BC, 0-1) was issued the loss in the seventh after only 1 2/3 innings of work.

Seth Rosin (Minn) started the game for the Mets and ran into trouble early in the top of the 2nd inning, when consecutive singles by Steve Chatwood (U. San Diego)and Brian Hernandez (UC Irvine), and a walk to Steven Selsky (Arizona) loaded the bases for the Red Sox. Rosin was able to pitch himself out of the jam though, striking out Chase Davidson (Georgia) and Daniel Butler (Arizona) to end the threat.

The Mets threatened in the bottom of the 5th after Ryan Cueno (Delaware) reached base on a single, and was then moved along the basepaths on a Kasey Swab (Young Harris) sacrifice bunt, and a Casey Johnson (OU) single; putting runners at the corners for Hyannis. The threat was ended though, when Jamal Austin (UAB) hit a hard chopper to third and a last second throw beat the Austin to the bag by a hair.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the 7th when Kevin Moran gave up consecutive singles to Red Sox Chase Davidson, and Daniel Butler moved Jonathon Jones (Long Beach St.), who entered the game to pinch run for Chase Davidson, into scoring postion at third base on a textbook hit and run. Will Wiedig (Brown) came in to relieve Moran, but gave up an RBI single to Blake Kelso (U of Houston) allowing Jones to score.

Y-D was able to tack on 2 more runs, scoring one in the top of the eighth when Steve Chatwood hit and RBI double to score Austin Wates (VTU). The Red Sox also added an insurance run in the top of the 9th after Austin Wates hit an RBI single to score Jordan Casas after a throwing error by Jake Dunning (Indiana) put Casas (Long Beach St.) on third base.

The Mets scored their only run in the bottom of the eigth, when Nick Crawford (UAB) reached base on a walk, and then stole second. A single by Casey Johnson moved Crawford to third base, and a passed ball allowed him to score.

The Mets look to take on the Wareham Gatemen tommorow night at Clem Spillane Field in Wareham at 7pm.

Mets Lose to Chatham in Second Consecutive Fog-Shortened Game

CHATHAM - Despite strong relief pitching and an early lead, the Hyannis Mets were unable to win their second fog-shortened game in a row Saturday night, falling to the Chatham Anglers 4-1 in eight innings.

Throughout the game, fielders on both sides were consistently struggling to spot fly balls as they flew through the thick fog hovering above Veteran's Field. The game was delayed for 30 minutes following the fourth inning and completed after a fog-aided inside-the-park home run by Chatham's Tom Belza (Oklahoma State) in the eighth inning. Belza crushed a pitch to the wall in center field, however due to the fog, none of the Hyannis outfielders saw the ball until it was too late and Belza was well on his way toward rounding the bases.

The Mets (1-1) scored their only run of the contest in the fourth inning on an error. After Shane Kroker (Wake Forest) led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sac bunt, Elliot Soto's (Creighton) chopper was thrown wide of first by the Chatham shortstop, allowing Kroker to score the Mets' first and only run of the night. Kroker led the Hyannis offense with two hits.

Chatham took a 2-1 advantage on a Steven Brooks (Wake Forest) two-run double and never relinquished the lead. The Anglers' bullpen dominated as they shutout the Mets for four innings while striking out nine.

Cole Johnson (Notre Dame) took the loss for Hyannis as he allowed seven hits and two runs in three and a third innings of work. Dallas Gallant (Sam Houston) pitched well in relief, allowing only one run in nearly four innings while striking out five. Jason Chowning pitched to only one batter before the game was called for the second and final time.

The Mets will return to action Sunday night at 7 p.m. as they take on the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at McKeon Park.

Mets Prevail 4-1 in Home Opener Called By Fog

Hyannis, MA-

Carried on the shoulders of pitcher Austin Hudson (Central Florida) and RBIs from Ryan Cueno (Delaware), Kenny Swab (Young Harris), and Shane Kroker (Wake Forest) the Hyannis Mets (1-0) beat the Bourne Braves 4-1 to win their 2009 home opener.

An ominous fog crept in through the trees and over the right field fence from the Hyannis Harbor, blanketing McKeon Park just as the Hyannis Mets and Bourne Braves were beginning their respective 2009 Cape Cod Baseball League campaigns. Though the fog made visibility limited, both teams elected to start the game. Though it seemed the fog had dissipated by the home half of the 3rd inning, a more dense fog came back to settle over the outfield in the beginning of the 6th inning with a 30 min fog delay being called in the bottom of the 7th inning with 1 out. The game was called at the end of the 30 min fog delay.

Hudson who went 6 solid innings, struck out 5 batters, and retired 8 in a row between the 3rd and 5th innings before issuing a walk, 1 of only 2 on the night for Hudson.

The Mets struck early, and scored their first run of the season in the home half of the 1st inning after Kenny Swab hit a RBI single to score Jamal Austin from second. Kenny Swab had a huge night for the Mets, going 3-3 with a double, a stolen base, and an RBI.

Ryan Cueno and Jamal Austin (UAB) also had big nights for the Mets at the plate; with Cueno going 2-4 with an RBI and Austin going 2-4, with two stolen bases.

Turner Phelps (0-1, James Madison) was issued the loss for the Braves (0-1), going 4 innings, giving up 4 runs, 3 of them earned.

The Hyannis Mets look to take on the Chatham Anglers at Veterans Field in Chatham tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
