Hyannis Mets Game Stories

Hyannis fell to 7-11 as the Western Division leading Bourne Braves upended the Mets 5-4. Squandered opportunities would be the theme of the day for Hyannis, which left 16 runners on base. Scott Elmendorf led the team in this category, leaving 7 runners on. This did not help the cause of pitcher Andrew Doyle, who allowed 3 earned runs through 5 and 2/3’s innings. Doyle pitched effectively, but ended the day with a no decision, giving up 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8.
The Mets struck early in the first when a bases loaded walk to third basemen Dan Brewer scored a run. However the Mets could not further capitalize as second basemen Scott Elmendorf bounced into an inning ending double play. Bourne did not take long to answer Hyannis’ first inning run, scoring its first in the bottom of the 2nd on a two out double by outfielder Bill Hall. In the top of the fourth, two walks and a single left the Mets with the bases loaded and only one out. Consecutive singles by Phil Bell and Shane Peterson scored 2 runs for the Mets, as they went up 3-1.
The Mets later came close to adding their fourth run in the top of the 6th. With runners on first and second, Shane Peterson hit an infield fly where he was ruled automatically out. What seemed as a dead play was revived by the alert base running of outfielder Joey Gonzales. Noticing that the third basemen Bill Perry was in the middle of the infield catching the pop up, Gonzales promptly tagged and beat the fielder to the vacant base in a thrilling dash. Gonzales’ efforts would go for naught however. After first basemen Kiko Vazquez struck out, Brewer was intentionally walked to first, leaving Scott Elmendorf up the bat with the bases again loaded. He could not capitalize however, grounding out to end the inning.
The Braves then tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a two run home run by outfielder Brian Pruitt. Hyannis Shortstop Ryan Jackson was able to put the Mets ahead the next inning, after an error by Bourne first basemen Mitch Moreland on a Joey Gonzales grounder.
The Braves went ahead for good in the bottom of the 7th. Pitcher Hunter Harris, on in relief for Doyle, allowed the first two runners on base, and after a sacrifice bunt and a walk, the bases were loaded. Garret Sherrill then took over, allowing a 2 run single to Bourne first basemen Josh Satin. The Braves took the lead and never looked back. Bourne pitcher Jordan Flasher finished off the Mets in the ninth to get the save and ensure victory for the Braves. The Mets will next take on the Orleans Cardinals tonight at Eldridge Park at 7 o clock.

Hyannis- With a one run game heading into the top of the eighth it looked like a nail biter that was going into extra innings. Jason Franzblau (Bradley) fanned six Whitecaps and looked in control with the only run coming from a shot over the right center fence from Yonder Alanso (U Miami).

The inning was started with a bunt single from Tavo Hall (San Francisco), followed by a double to the gap in right center by Blake Tekotte (U Miami) which prompted coach Greg King to head to the pen. James Jolicoeur (UC Northridge) had a 1.23 and fourteen strikeouts in fourteen innings pitched heading into tonight’s game, so it wasn’t like Coach King was heading into a pressure situation with an unproven arm. However, today was not Jolicoer’s day. After giving up an infield hit to Austin Yount (Stanford) to score Hall from third, Yonder Alanso who was two for three with a homerun, Alanso hit a three run shot over the right field fence. A double by David Cooper (California) and a walk by Byron Wiley (Kansas State) paved the way for Brad Glenn (Arizona) to hit the second three run homer of the inning.

If you stepped away to use the restroom or grab a hot dog you could have missed the seven run eighth from Brewster.

Playing with a sense of urgency up at bat, the Mets were able to put up three runs in the eighth, but it was no match for the four run lead they were down. A game that was coming up on the two and a half minute mark through eight seemed to go on forever after the quick pace from both Franzblau and Mika Colla (Arizona). Final score Mets four, Brewster eight. Hyannis will travel to Upper Cape Tech at 2pm Sunday to take on the Bourne Braves.

CHATHAM- The Hyannis Mets offense got back on track pounding out eleven hits after the fourth inning in Chatham. The Mets got back in the win column defeating the Chatham A's 8-3 Thursday night.
Hunter Harris (Texas) took the win for the Mets, pitching in relief for starter Matt Daly (Hawaii). Daly went 5 1/3 innings in his best start of the season giving up 2 runs and striking out 7. Walks clearly plagued Daly and inevitably lead to his early exit. After walking the first two batters of the second inning Daly was able to strike his way out of the jam. Unfortunately the same was not true for the fourth inning as Daly again walked the first two A's batters. Chatham took advantage of the situation and plated the game's first two runs. The Mets starter was able to make quick work of the Chatham A's fifth inning retiring the side in order. However, a high pitch count forced Daly from the game in the fifth inning giving way to Harris.
Chatham A's starter Charles Brewer (UCLA) made the two run lead look comfortable as he cruised through the first four innings spotless, retiring the first twelve Mets batters he faced. James Darnell (South Carolina) broke up the no-hitter in the fifth inning as he blasted a double into left center. Darnell advanced to third on a Joey Gonzalez (UC-Riverside) single. The Mets got on the board when Kiko Vazquez (UCF) hit a fly ball to right field deep enough to score Darnell from third.
After breaking the seal in the fifth inning the Mets came alive scoring in each consecutive inning. Mets batters plated one run in the fifth, sixth & seventh innings, three in the eighth and two in the ninth.
James Darnell crushed a solo homerun to right-center in the ninth inning and ended the night going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's. Shane Peterson (Long Beach St.) continued to tear apart Cape League pitching going 2 for 4 with one run batted in. UC-Riverside Left Fielder Joey Gonzalez also went 2 for 4 and drove in a run as well.
Earning the win for the Mets, Hunter Harris entered with one out in the fifth inning and never looked back. Harris was strong in his 2 1/3 innings of work striking out 4 A's batters. Harris gave up two hits in the seventh but bounced back in the eighth striking out the side.
Harris gave way to Mets closer Tyler Stohr (North Florida). Although not a save situation Stohr came in to close the door on the Chatham ninth inning. Stohr struggled to find his groove but gave up just one run ending the game in favor of the Mets 8-3.

HYANNIS - The Cotuit Kettleers took a 4-3 lead over the Hyannis Mets into the bottom of the eighth inning, which had been designated as the last inning. It took a Dan Brewer (Bradley) home run off of Josh Lindblom with one out in the inning to tie the game at four in a game that would end after eight innings with the score 4-4.

The Mets got on the bored in the very first inning, as Scott Elmendorf (Southern Illinois) reached on an error, Shane Peterson (Long Beach State) singled, and they both advanced on a balk. With runners on second and third, James Darnell (South Carolina) stepped up and hit a triple to left center field plating both runners.

Cotuit got one run back in the top of the third when Correy Figueroa (St. Petersburg) walked and scored on a double by Josh Harrison (Cincinnati). Hyannis took it right back though, as Peterson delivered his second hit of the day, a home run to left field that just missed hitting a target placed beyond the left field fence.

The game's momentum took an enormous swing in the top of the sixth and into the seventh. In the sixth the Kettleers scored two runs on a base hit from Reese Havens (South Carolina) that scored Ryne White (Purdue) and Jason Rook (Appalachian State). They took the lead in the seventh when Figueroa scored on a double from Mets killer Robert Stock (USC).

The game situation for Hyannis mirrored the weather as the game moved to the eighth: glum and dreary. But, with one out in the eighth, Brewer hit his third home run of the season to tie the game at four. The Mets would load the bases, but fail to score the winning run in the eighth and final inning.

Bryce Stowell of UC Irvine started for the Mets and turned in his second strong start in as many outings, going six innings and giving up three earned runs and seven hits while fanning seven. South Carolina's Robert Stock took the hill for Cotuit and lasted five plus innings, giving up two runs and just one earned, while striking out four.

The Mets return to the field Thursday night, as they travel to Chatham to take on the Athletics.

SOUTH YARMOUTH- Terry Doyle (Boston College) improved his record to 3-1 and shut out the Hyannis Mets in 7 1/3 innings of work as the Y-D Red Sox defeated the Hyannis Mets 5-0 on Tuesday night. Doyle struck out seven Mets batters and gave up just two hits while walking just one. Austin Wood (Texas) gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings of work for the Mets and was stuck with his first loss of the season.

Wood got through the first two innings unscathed but gave up the eventual game winning run when Grant Green (USC) scored on a Sean Ochinko (LSU) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning. The Red Sox added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively. The Red Sox scored one last run off of Mets starter Austin Wood when Collin Cowgill (Kentucky) hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the fourth inning.

Wood was replaced by Cal Northridge right-hander James Jolicouer who entered the game with a 1.35 ERA in four appearances. Jolicouer worked effectively retiring all four batters he faced.

The Red Sox added three more in the bottom half of the eighth when San Diego reliever Ricardo Pecina, who has had a difficult time getting things going this season, started off by walking the first two batters. Aaron Luna (Rice) and Collin Cowgill scored on a pinch-hitting Diego Seastrunk (Rice) single. Jason Castro (Stanford) who reached on a fielder’s choice scored the final run of the game on a perfectly executed squeeze play by Grant Green (USC).

Four hits were all Mets batters were able to muster as David Macias (Vanderbilt), Shane Petersen (Southern Illinois), Patrick Long (Georgia Tech) and Shea Robin (Vanderbilt) all singled in the contest.

Hyannis improved their record to 6-8 with an 11-8 victory over the Chatham A's tonight. Hyannis wasted no time in getting runs across the board. The first four batters scored for Hyannis, including a fantastic push bunt by center fielder Dan Brewer that didn’t even garner a throw. After a walk to third basemen James Darnell, right fielder Shane Peterson smoked a liner to right center, ending up on third and clearing the bases. He would later score on a grounder by first basemen Kiko Vazquez. Peterson, who entered the game batting a team high .354, ended the day 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, 2 runs and a hit by pitch. Brewer and Vazquez also ended the day with 3 RBIs a piece. The Mets would add two more runs in the second, with Elmendorf scoring his second run in as many innings. Chatham pitcher Tom Milone struggled early on, loading the bases in his first two innings of work. He settled down after the second however, recording consecutive 1-2-3 innings.

For Hyannis, pitcher Andrew Doyle further established himself as the resident staff ace for the Mets. Improving to 3-0 on the season, he finished the day with 6 innings of work, striking out 5, walking 2 and allowing two earned runs. His toughest inning of work came in the fourth, when Allan Dykstra led off the inning scorching a 400 foot double over the head of Brewer. After a single by Kevin McAvoy and an ensuing walk, Doyle was left with the bases loaded and only one out. A sacrifice fly by Addison Johnson then brought Dykstra home with Chatham’s second run of the day. After an error by Darnell, Doyle got third basemen Jermaine Curtis to ground out to third to get out of the inning.

The fifth inning began with a lucky play to record the third out. With a fly ball to right by Dykstra, catcher Tim Federowicz faked like he was tagging up from second, only to trip on his way back to the bag. Shortstop Ryan Jackson intercepted the throw from Peterson right off of second and easily tagged the Chatham catcher out. In the bottom half of the inning, the offensive onslaught continued for the Mets, starting with a walk to Darnell. Three straight doubles by Peterson, Vazquez, and Jackson left the Mets with a 9-3 lead. The Mets would add their last 2 runs in the sixth, with a two run home run by Brewer. His shot to right was his second of the year, which leads the team.

Doyle was relieved in the seventh by Stephen Penney, the newest addition to the Mets. Penney struggled, having to leave the mound allowing five runs. The inning didn't come to an end until Hunter Harris got Addison Johnson to fly out. Harris would finish the game for the Mets, working 2 and one-thirds of an inning, allowing only one run on a wild pitch in the ninth. The Mets will continue their season on the road Tuesday at 5, where they play the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at Red Wilson Park.

HYANNIS - The Wareham Gatemen did something they haven't they done since opening day Thursday night in Hyannis. Win a game. The Gatemen defeated the Mets 6-3 behind a strong pitching performance by Jeremy Bleich (Stanford) and three RBI's from Beamer Weems (Baylor).

Wareham scored five runs before the Hyannis even got on the board. In the first Seth Henry (Tulane) reached and scored on an error, Weems singled and scored on a groundout by Russ Moldenhauer (Texas), and Blake Dean (LSU) scored on a basehit from Diallo Fon (Arizona). Two more runs would come across in the second on a Weems single that plated Luke Murton (Georgia Tech) and Henry.

Hyannis scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second. Kiko Vazquez (Central Florida) led off with a single and was sacrificed over by Scott Elmendorf (Southern Illinois). Patrick Long (Georgia Tech) followed with a single and Ryan Jackson (Miami) reached on a walk to load to the bases before Shea Robin (Vanderbilt) singled in two runs. Phil Bell (UAB) would follow Robin with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-3, but that would be the extent of the Mets scoring.

The Gatemen tacked on an insurance run the sixth as Weems singled home yet another run, as Ike Davis (Arizona State) scored. This all but did the Mets in as they didn't have another great scoring chance the rest of the way.

Wareham's bullpen came on and did a strong job of protecting the lead, allowing just a two out double in the eighth to Shane Peterson (Long Beach State). Chris Hicks (Georgia Tech) came on to record his second save, as Bleich improved to 1-0 and Matt Daly (Hawaii) fell to 3-0 on the season.

The Mets will send Austin Hudson (Central Florida) to the mound tomorrow as they travel to Bourne to take on the Braves at Doran Park.
