Prior to Notre Dame, Ryan was a four-year letter winner at Marshall (Mich.) High School, leading his team to an appearance in the 2006 state semifinals as a junior. He served as team captain that season, on his way to All-District, All-Conference and All-Area selections. Ryan also lettered on the Marshall football team as a quarterback, receiver and safety. His brother Evan is a junior infielder for the Fighting Irish and was the backup to quarterback Brady Quinn on the 2006 football team.
