Tyler saw limited action as a freshman for Virginia in 2008, but did strike out 13 batters in 15 innings.  He earned recognition pitching for the Delaware Cows in the Great Lakes Summer League last year, going 2-2 with a 1.82 ERA in nine starts.  Tyler was ranked as the top prospect in the league by Baseball America.  At Midlothian High School in Virginia he was selected to the 2007 Junior National Team and ranked as the 88th best prospect in the nation by Baseball America, posting a 7-2 record with a 1.09 ERA as a senior to go with a .430 batting average and seven home runs.
