story from 7/17/05; posted on 7/17/05 at 23:21 EDT HYANNIS--The Cotuit Kettleers sent the Hyannis Mets to their seventh straight loss and their 20th of the season by a 7-1 score on Sunday afternoon at McKeon Park. The Mets have a chance to even the season series with the Kettleers at 2-2 on Monday at Cotuit's Lowell Park. Cotuit took precisely four pitches to gain the lead it never relinquished. Brad Boyer led off the game with a lined homer to right field, his first of the season, off of Mets starter Adrian Alaniz. It was a strong day at the plate for Boyer, who added doubles in the fifth and ninth innings to finish 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Veteran Bryan Harris also did well at the plate for the Kettleers, going 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the third and two runs scored. After his single in the third, he executed a delayed steal of second and scored when nobody took the throw at the base. Alaniz (0-2) never truly settled in after the Boyer homer, taking the loss in five innings. He struck out three and walked two, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Mike Koons gave up three straight hits when he came into the game in the sixth, but he only allowed one more hit in three innings after Devin Thomas's two-run double to left. Chris Duke surrendered an unearned run and struck out two in the ninth inning. The win for Cotuit went to starter Josh Johnson (3-0), who fanned seven and walked one in seven full innings of work. He allowed the lone run in the second inning, when Chris Johnson came home on a Mark McGonigle base hit. Johnson led off the inning with a single to center and stole second during McGonigle's at-bat. Center fielder Kevin Koski was the lone multiple hitter for the Mets, going 2-for-3 with two singles. Jay Miller and Brandon Masters (double) also had hits for Hyannis. Stats of note...the win gave the Kettleers a 2-1 lead in the second annual Barnstable Patriot Cup...the last Mets starter to see the seventh inning was Ryan Kennedy, who lasted 6 1/3 innings on July 7 at Orleans...Mets left fielder Mike Baxter signed with the San Diego Padres as their fourth-round draft pick on Saturday night. |
