rally back to tie Whitecaps, 8-8 story from 6/17/02; posted on 6/18/02 at 01:51 EDT --HYANNIS--Trailing by five runs with two out in the ninth, the Hyannis Mets put up their best offensive showing of the season with five quick runs to tie the Brewster Whitecaps, 8-8. The bright sunshine at McKeon Field permitted the game to be continued for three hours, but play was finally halted due to darkness after 10 innings. The nine-batter ninth was almost a bust for Hyannis. Logan Sorensen led off with a double down the left-field line, but the next two batters struck out. After a walk to Michael Lombardi, Travis Garcia poked a base hit, also down the left-field line, to score Sorensen. A Brian Horwitz single brought home Lombardi, and another left-field line double, this one from Brandon Green, scored Garcia to make the score 8-6. Brewster's pitcher, B.J. Borsa (Cincinnati), was pulled after that string of hits in favor of righty submariner Bryan Gale (Michigan State). Left-handed hitter Justin Niefer took advantage of this matchup quickly, driving Gale's third pitch into the right field power alley for another double. This play scored Horwitz from second and Green from first to tie the game and force an uneventful tenth inning before the game was suspended. The Whitecaps' biggest inning was the fifth, in which four Brewster runners crossed the plate. Leadoff batter Jayce Tingler (Missouri) highlighted the inning with a two-run double and would later score on a Pat Maloney (Kansas State) single. Tingler also had Brewster's first run and last RBI as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate. The leading run scorer for Brewster was third baseman Trey Wakefield (William & Mary), who came home after each of his last three plate appearances. Brewster received solid starting work from Bobby Sawicki (SW Texas State), who gave up only three hits and one earned run through seven innings. He had six strikeouts and two walks in an outing of 90 pitches. Neifer's double left Gale with a blown save, his first of the year. The Mets' starter was Brian Wilson (Louisiana State), who piched for five innings while letting up five hits and three earned runs. He walked four and struck out five. Ryan Dixon (U. of Miami) pitched two relief innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run. Shane Hawk (Oklahoma State) pitched one-plus innings for the Mets, and the final two innings were worked by Cory Hahn (Kentucky). Stats of note...the Hyannis infield turned four double plays, two of which were made possible in the late innings by grounders from Brewster catcher Brady Burrill (Michigan State)...thanks to the other two double plays and a timely pickoff, Wilson faced the minimum number of batters through the first three innings even though a runner reached base in each inning...Hyannis quintupled its total season run output after today's game, jumping from 2 to 10. |
