Biernbaum, Taylor pace Mets to Opening Day win story from 6/12/01; posted on 6/13/01 at 00:34 EDT --YARMOUTH--The Hyannis Mets kicked off the 2001 season with a 5-1 victory over the Y-D Red Sox at Red Wilson Field. A twelve-hit attack from the Mets offense as well as a strong showing on the mound were both key in the Mets' first win of the season. L.J. Biernbaum (Florida Atlantic) was the spark for the Mets' bats, having a 4-for-5 afternoon with a double, a stolen base, and three runs scored. He hit in his first four at-bats and scored in his first three, and was brought home each time by Mike Brown (William & Mary). Brown was 3-for-5 in the game with a pair of runs and a pair of RBI. Justin Taylor (Baylor) was impressive in his first start for the Mets since last year's divisional playoffs. Taylor (1-0) pitched eight scoreless innings, scattering five hits, striking out three, and walking none. He was perfect to the bottom five batters in the Y-D order, not allowing a single baserunner in 15 trips to the plate for those hitters. Cape League vet Bobby Korecky (Michigan) took the mound for the Red Sox and was charged with the loss. Korecky (0-1) was hit up for three earned runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out two. Three innings of scoreless relief were pitched by Clark Saylor (William & Mary), and the ninth was hurled by Chuck Betchel (Marist). The Red Sox had a pair of two-hit bats in their lineup. Leadoff hitter and second baseman Tila Reynolds (Washington) had hits in the third and sixth innings, and second-year Y-D catcher John Baker (Cal-Berkeley) reached in the first and fourth innings. Hyung Cho (Houston) scored Y-D's run in the ninth after reaching on a walk. The other multi-hit game for the Mets came off the bat of Osterville's Jayme Dorr (Trinity), who signed on with the club as a temporary player. Dorr was 2-for-4 with two singles. Returning right fielder Brian Stavisky (Notre Dame) was 1-for-4 on the day. Hits were also contributed by Jason Perry (Georgia Tech) and Nick Bland (Belmont Abbey), who had an RBI on that hit. Stats of note...both of today's starters were Cape Leaguers last season, Taylor for the Mets and Korecky for the Chatham A's...In two games at Red Wilson Field in the past two seasons, Taylor's career stats include a 2-0 record, 17 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, 11 strikeouts, one walk, and a 1.59 ERA...over the same time span, Korecky has now faced the Mets twice with less success. His career stats against Hyannis include an 0-2 record, 11 innings pitched, 7 earned runs, 7 strikeouts, 6 walks, and a 5.73 ERA. HYANNIS---------201

Orleans tops Mets in Hyannis home opener story from 6/13/01; posted on 6/13/01 at 23:57 EDT --HYANNIS--The Orleans Cardinals edged out the Hyannis Mets by a 5-4 score at the first game at McKeon Field of the year. The Mets fall to 1-1 with the loss, while the Cardinals remain undefeated at 2-0.The Cardinal offense produced ten hits on the day, and had three players with multi-hit games. Three hits were had by Larry Broadway (Duke), who also scored once and drove in three runs. Russ Adams (North Carolina) had a pair of singles on the day and scored after both of his hits. Right fielder Tyler Davidson (Washington) also had two hits. Three of Hyannis' five hits came off the bat of Brian Stavisky, who went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run, a double, and two RBI. Both times, he drove in L.J. Biernbaum, who reached on a walk and a single. The other run and hit came from Mike Brown, who reached and came in during the three-run fourth. He was driven in by Jason Perry after reaching third on a two-base throwing error. Orleans starter Joey Bateman (Mass. College/Liberal Arts) picked up the win after a seven-inning outing. Bateman (1-0) allowed three earned runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one. Reliever Andy Hutchings (College of Charleston) earned his first save of the year, striking out five in two hitless innings of work. David Humen (Oral Roberts) was the losing pitcher for Hyannis after giving up the go-ahead run to Orleans in the seventh inning. Humen (0-1) went 2 2/3 innings for the Mets, surrendering the run on two hits while striking out two batters. Starter Chris Cochran went four-plus innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. The final pitcher of the game was Kevin Ool (Marist), who let up one hit and struck out one in 2 1/3 innings. Stats of note...the road team has won both of the Mets' games, a trend that they hope will continue as they head to Cotuit tomorrow...Hyannis resident Brad Scioletti (West Point) had a double and a run for Orleans today, reaching base three times...catcher Nick Bland has been impressive with his arm, throwing out three runners in four attempts. Mets pitching makes and breaks 2-1 loss to Cotuit story from 6/14/01; posted on 6/14/01 at 23:28 EDT --COTUIT--A one-hitter by the Hyannis pitching staff was not enough to produce a victory for the Mets, as a series of untimely mistakes allowed two runs to come in for the Kettleers on that one hit. Cotuit pulled out its first victory of the season against the Mets, edging out a 2-1 win at a foggy and damp Lowell Park. The Mets had a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Starter Travis Teeter (RPI) had not allowed a hit in 3 2/3 innings despite plunking three batters. He surrendered his first and only hit to first baseman and cleanup hitter Scott Edwardsen (Le Moyne). Edwardsen was able to score on walks to the next three consecutive batters. The hitter who followed Edwardsen, Chris Hall (Indiana State), came home on a wild pitch to the eventual last batter of the inning. Hyannis' run was put on the board in the first inning. L.J. Biernbaum hit a line-drive single into center, and he was brought home after similar hits by Brian Stavisky and Nick Bland. Bland picked up the RBI for that run. Biernbaum collected one more hit during the day, and Stavisky went 3-for-3 with an intentional walk. The only other hit on the day was collected by second baseman Cameron Coughlan (Brigham Young). Teeter (0-1) got the loss for the Mets despite an impressive line. He went 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking four. His relief was Kevin Ool, who pitched a nearly perfect 1 1/3 innings in his second straight day of work. Cotuit's winner was their starter, Chadd Blasko (Purdue), who went a solid eight innings while striking out five. Reliever Brantley Jordan (Texas) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the year. The Mets had to do some lineup shuffling to contend with the loss of center fielder Mike Brown, who injured his knee in the fifth inning while trying to beat out a play at first. He was helped off the field after the play; his health status is currently unkown, but we will update news on his condition tomorrow night. Stats of note...the total of four hit batsmen by Teeter is a record so far this season, eclipsing the total of three that were hit by all Mets pitchers on Tuesday night against Orleans...the heavy air in Cotuit may have been a factor in the total lack of extra-base hits during this game...the free pass issued to Stavisky was the first given to a Mets hitter this season. Dramatic finish in Mets win over Harwich story from 6/15/01; posted on 6/16/01 at 01:11 EDT --HYANNIS--Trailing by one run in the
ninth, a two-run double by L.J. Biernbaum earned the Mets a win over
the Harwich Mariners. The final score was 7-6 from muggy McKeon Field.
The game saw Hyannis tied with the M's heading into the ninth. But Harwich put one on the board, placing pressure on the Mets to get the win in the bottom half. With runners on first and second and one out, Biernbaum powered a 1-1 pitch into deep left field, scoring Jayme Dorr for the tie and Cameron Coughlan for the win. Harwich took the early lead in the top of the second. A one-out double by Luke Appert (Minnesota) was followed by a two-RBI single by Pat Boran (Princeton) that was just out of second baseman Coughlan's reach. That hit scored Appert and Jared Musolf (Old Dominion), who reached on a walk. Nick Bland had a base hit to center to lead off the bottom half of the inning. He was brought home by a triple from Jason Perry that managed to creep just over the center fielder's grasp. But Harwich widened their lead with a three run homer from Ryan Mulhern (South Alabama). The gap was first shortened by a solo shot from Brian Stavisky, a liner to right that was his first home run of the year. In the seventh, the Mets sent three more runs across the plate on no hits (more on that later) to tie the score at five. Boran started the ninth for Harwich with an infield single. He stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Jeff Mackor (Boston College). That gave the Mariners the lead which would soon be erased by Biernbaum's late-game theatrics. Eric Maycroft (Wake Forest) improves to 1-0 with his first victory of the season. Although he surrendered the go-ahead run to Harwich in the ninth, he was officially the pitcher when Coughlan crossed the plate with the winning run. The starter for the Mets was Jason Tourangeau (RPI), who put in six innings of work, allowing five earned runs on six hits and striking out three. David Humen pitched a hitless 1 1/3 innings of work, and Kevin Ool pitched for the third straight day, striking out the only two batters he faced. Harwich's loss was handed to Dave Seccombe (San Francisco), who pitched well otherwise in his 2 1/3 innings. Former Hyannis Mets pitcher Matt Lynch (Florida State) was Harwich's starter, and he struck out nine while scattering four hits in his six innings. Stats of note...Mets center fielder Mike Brown, who sustained a severe knee strain in Thursday's game against Cotuit, is expected to miss 1-2 weeks of action...the Mets 7th inning saw three runs cross on no hits thanks to a pair of errors, a walk, a hit batsmen, and an unlikely three sacrifices...thirteen runs were scored in the game, and yet no player scored more than once. Mets win a nail-biter over Falmouth, 6-5 story from 6/16/01; posted on 6/17/01 at 11:22 EDT --FALMOUTH--It doesn't appear that there will be any simple games for the Mets this season. Hyannis got everyone's blood racing again Saturday night with a 6-5 win over Falmouth at Guv Fuller Field. The Mets put the first runs on the board in the fourth inning thanks to a Brian Stavisky triple that scored Spencer Harris and L.J. Biernbaum. Stavisky would also score later in the inning to make it 3-0. A fourth run was added in the sixth inning on Jason Perry's first home run of the year, a high solo shot to right field. Falmouth was one-hit by starter Tom Kandybowicz (Villanova) up until the sixth inning, when they sent three runs across the plate. This was thanks to hits by Erick Macha (TCU), Walter Majewski (Rutgers), and Ben King (Texas), and a sacrifice fly from Jarrod Schmidt (Clemson). The runs were scored by Majewski, Bryan Erstad (Wichita State), and Erik Schindewolf (Texas A&M). Stavisky would score another run for the Mets in the eighth inning. After reaching on a grounder into center, he moved to second on a botched pickoff attempt and would eventually score on a bases-loaded walk to Cameron Coughlan. The sixth and final Mets run was scored by Harris, who was brought in on a Stavisky sacrifice fly. That run would prove vital for the Mets' survival in the bottom half of the ninth. Justin Lord, Florida State closer who made his first appearance for the Mets, got into some trouble in the last frame. A leadoff error and a pair of walks quickly loaded the bases for Falmouth catcher Jed English (Virginia Tech), who nearly cleared them with a line drive hit down the right field line. Two runs came in to cut the Hyannis lead to one. After a strikeout, a third walk loaded the bases again. But Lord forced Macha to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game and save the win for the Mets. Kandybowicz (1-0) earned his first win of the season for the Mets, allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out four in 5 1/3 innings. Lord picked up his first save. Mike Sollie (NC State) pitched the rest of the sixth inning in relief of Kandybowicz, and Blake Taylor (South Carolina) struck out four in his two perfect innings of relief. Raymond Clark (Texas) picked up his first loss of the season, and he falls to a record of 1-1. Clark struck out seven in his six innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits. DH Schmidt was activated as a pitcher in the seventh inning, and he K'd four while walking five in three innings of work. Stats of note...out of the five teams in the Western Division, four are tied for first place with a 3-2 record, including Hyannis and Falmouth...the first three innings of this game were played in 26 minutes; if the game had stayed at this pace, it would have been only one hour and eight minutes long (instead, it was two hours and thirty-eight minutes long)...Biernbaum now leads the Mets with seven runs scored in five games, but his 2-for-5 day at the plate actually lowered his batting average, which was at .500. Rain drenches Mets' hopes as Red Sox win, 3-0 story from 6/17/01; posted on 6/18/01 at 23:38 EDT --HYANNIS--The Y-D Red Sox got in their scoring before the rains came to McKeon Field. They won a 3-0 game over the Hyannis Mets in a game that lasted only seven innings before the remnants of Tropical Storm Allison started to pour precipitation over the park. Y-D got a seven-inning shutout from their two pitchers, Jesse Carlson (Connecticut) and Issac Pavlik (Seton Hall). Carlson (1-0) got the win; he struck out four and walked one in his five innings of four-hit ball. Pavlik picked up his third save of the year after pitching two perfect innings for the Red Sox. Justin Taylor made his second start of the year and his second appearance against Y-D. Taylor (1-1) was sharp in his six innings, but still got the loss for the Mets. He struck out five and allowed two earned runs on five hits. He received relief in the seventh inning from Eric Maycroft and David Humen. The first Red Sox run was scored by Ryan Klocksien (Kansas) in the second inning. He reached on a walk and would eventually score on a single by second-year Cape Leaguer Steve Sollmann (Notre Dame). Another run would be added in the sixth inning. Veteran outfielder Paul O'Toole (Notre Dame) bunted his way on, moved to second on a passed ball, and came to the plate on a Klocksien single. The third run was plated by Hyung Cho, who scored on John Baker's single to left field in the seventh inning. Hyannis had four hits in the game. The only player with more than one hit was first baseman Jason Perry, who hit a two-out single in the second and a triple in the fifth inning. Hits were also contributed by Kyle Frank (who had an infield hit in the third inning) and Cameron Coughlan. Stats of note...Jason Perry now leads the league in triples with two...webmaster Will Bussiere missed his first Mets game in 62 contests to attend the Dave Matthews Band concert in Foxboro (hey, I'm the webmaster, so I can make myself a Stat Of Note if I want to!); the longest games-attended streak still belongs to Hyannis PA announcer Tim Ellstrom, whose Iron Man streak is well into triple digits...on Opening Day, we reported Taylor's two-year stats at Red Wilson Field. Hyannis offense stifled again; Bourne cruises story from 6/18/01; posted on 6/18/01 at 21:52 EDT --BOURNE--The Mets were unable to send
any runs across the plate for the second straight day, this time dropping
a 2-0 contest to the Bourne Braves at very sunny Coady Field.
Bourne was powered by a two-hit performance from their pitching staff. Starter Casey Shumaker (Jacksonville) went six innings, allowing only one of the two hits while striking out six and walking none. He earned the win to improve to 1-0. Three other relievers each pitched an inning to combine on the shutout. Mike Dennison (Wichita State) pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts; Matt Brown (Cal-Berkeley) struck out the side in the eighth; and Ryan Speier (Radford) gave up the second hit while K'ing two for his league-leading fourth save of the year. The Mets were not without solid pitching. Blake Taylor got the start and pitched six innings, striking out five wilhe giving up only one run on three hits. Taylor (0-1) got the tough-luck loss in his outing. The other pitchers in the game were Mike Sollie and Kevin Ool, who pitched an inning each. Bourne's first run came in the top of the first, when Brian Burgamy (Wichita State) reached on a walk. He stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on an Andy Jarvis (Oregon State) single. They scored again in the seventh, when Will Hudson (Oregon State) was hit with a pitch and scored on a Burgamy hit. Other Bourne offense was produced by James Burgess (Tulane) who had a double in the sixth; and Nick Italiano (Pennsylvania), who had a hit to lead off the fifth inning. Hyannis had two hits in the game. Jason Perry had the first hit of the game, a hard line drive in the third inning, but was stranded at third base. In the ninth inning, Brian Stavisky unsuccessfully tried to start a rally with a one-out single to center. Stats of note...the Mets have not scored in sixteen innings...in the last three games in a row, Hyannis has put runners on base in the third inning and failed to bring them home...since the Mets got in seven innings yesterday, they now have a day off on Tuesday after playing seven straight games. straight game at Spillane Field in Wareham on Wednesday night. Stranding
17 runners in the three hours and 17 minutes game, Hyannis was unable
to put more than three runs on the board, falling to the Gatemen by
a score of 6-3.
The Gatemen pulled ahead of the Mets right away, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first off of starting pitcher Travis Teeter. Since the Mets never recovered from this opening blow, Teeter (0-1) was charged with the loss after going just two-thirds of an inning. Five runs (four earned) were allowed in that stretch on four hits and two walks. The highlight for Wareham in that inning was a two-run double by third baseman Aaron Hill (Louisiana State) that brought the first two runs home. Eleven hitters went to the plate in that frame. Teeter was relieved in the first inning by Chris Cochran, who calmed the Wareham offense for the next 5 1/3 innings. He scattered six hits, allowing only one run in the sixth inning, and striking out four batters while walking one. David Humen and Justin Lord each pitched one hitless inning of relief. Wareham starter Mark Michael (Kentucky) earned the win in his five-inning outing. He struck out four and walked four while allowing zero runs on four hits. His first relief came from Todd Deininger, whose three walks allowed two runs to score on no hits. Kenon Ronz (Harvard) stopped the bleeding caused by Deininger, but got into a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and allowed one run to score. Pat Neshek (Butler) came in and struck out the only batter he faced to pick up his first save of the season. The rally in the ninth started for the Mets when Jason Perry drew a one-out walk. A Cameron Coughlan single moved him to second; a walk issued to Jayme Dorr brought him to third; and he scored on another walk to Kyle Frank. That was all that the Mets were able to come up with, as the bases were left loaded to end the game. The Gatemen's sixth run was scored by Paul Henry (Ball State), who reached on a single to center and scored on Hill's second double of the day. Hill was thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple. Besides Hill and Henry, multi-hit games were also had by Eric Reed (Texas A&M) and Matt Murton (Georgia Tech). The offensive leader for the Mets was Perry, who was 2-for-3 on the evening. He also had a pair of walks, a run, and an RBI. Hits were also contributed by Frank, Spencer Harris, and Brian Stavisky. Stats of note...the Mets left the bases loaded four times, including three times in a row beginning in the third inning...Stanford catcher Ryan Garko made his debut for the Mets, and was hit with a pitch in his first plate appearance, one of five batters to be hit on the night...the longest game of the year for the Mets took place at the site of their longest road trip, a distance of 34.2 miles from McKeon Field. Hyannis defense picks up 3-1 win over Falmouth story from 6/21/01; posted on 6/21/01 at 23:27 EDT --HYANNIS--The Mets snapped their losing streak of three games with a 3-1 victory over the Falmouth Commodores at breezy McKeon Field. A solid defense on the Mets' part was essential in countering the Commodores' ten-hit offense. The first Mets run was scored in the bottom of the first. Kyle Frank led off the inning with a single into center. During the next at-bat, he broke to steal second base. Falmouth catcher Jed English's throw was short and bounced into center field, allowing Frank to make it to third. The center fielder tried to get Frank at third, but his throw was also well short and Frank came to the plate. The next run came in the fourth inning, when Ryan Garko led off with a walk. A throwing error by the pitcher allowed him to move to third, and he came home when L.J. Biernbaum grounded into a double play. Garko would score again in the sixth inning, when he hit a one-out triple into left-center field. He tagged and scored when the next batter, Jason Perry, hit a foul that was caught on a slide by the left fielder for a strange sacrifice fly. Hyannis' defense was able to stave off the Commodores' attack by committing no errors. They helped to strand eight Commodore baserunners as well as turn a pair of memorable double plays. The first twin killing came in the sixth inning, when a potential one-out sacrifice fly by English threatened to tie the game. Frank made the catch in mid-depth left field and proceeded to gun out runner Hunter Brown (Rice) at the plate. A similar play occurred in the eighth inning; this time, Brian Stavisky in right field threw out a runner all the way at third base to end the inning. Jason Tourangeau (1-0) got the win as the Mets starter. He went six innings for Hyannis, striking out three and walking one while allowing one run on eight hits. After two scoreless innings of relief from Kevin Ool, Justin Lord pitched a perfect ninth with a pair of K's for his second save. Falmouth scored its run in the third inning. Center fielder Jon Kaplan (Tulane) hit a two-out single, stole second, and scored on a hit down the left-field line by Erick Macha. Macha, as well as Mark Michael (Old Dominion), were both multiple hitters for Falmouth. Doubles were also had by Michael, Walter Majewski, and Jarrod Schmidt (Clemson). The loss for the Commodores went to starting pitcher Steven Herce (Rice). He had six strong innings nonetheless, striking out seven and walking two while surrendering the three runs (one earned) on four hits. Reliever Ryan Schroyer (Arizona State) struck out two while giving up one hit in his two innings of work. Stats of note...while the Mets' defense was errorless, Falmouth committed four errors...on the longest day of the year, the game lasted only two hours and fourteen minutes, a full hour shorter than Wednesday's game...in both of the last two Mets games, the team who has sent fewer batters to the plate has scored more runs. Mets lead lost to Cotuit; 3-2 final story from 6/22/01; posted on 6/23/01 at 00:55 EDT --COTUIT--The Mets were unable to hold on to their lead as Cotuit slipped by them for the second time in two meetings between the two teams. The final score from Lowell Park on Friday afternoon was 3-2. The Mets had a lead of 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, when the Kettleers sent all of their runs across the plate. Shortstop John Swearingen (Chipola JC) led off the inning with a base hit up the middle, and was moved to third on a hit from Brent Metheny (James Madison). They both scored on a deep triple by newcomer Adam Swann (Georgia) to tie the game. Swann came in to score on a single by Scott Edwardsen to take the ultimate lead in the game. Hyannis brought home its two runs in the first and sixth innings. Kyle Frank led off the game with a single into center field. Moving on a hit-and-run with Brian Stavisky at the plate, he made it to third on a fielding error by the second baseman. Frank would score to make it 1-0 on a Jason Perry groundout. In the sixth, Stavisky walked with one out and, with the help of three passed balls by catcher Alberto Concepcion (Southern Cal), came into score on a Ryan Garko sacrifice fly. Cotuit received strong pitching that limited the Mets to only two hits. Both of them were surrendered by starter Kyle Sleeth (Wake Forest), who also struck out four and walked two while giving up the two runs (neither of them were earned). He picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the year. His relief was Brantley Jordan, who picked up his second save of the year (his first was also against the Mets) with three perfect innings of work and five strikeouts. Mets pitcher Tom Kandybowicz (1-1) got the loss after 5 2/3 innings. He was dominant up until the sixth inning, retiring eleven batters in a row after a leadoff single to start the game. His line included six hits, three earned runs, two strikeouts, and no walks. Reliever Mike Sollie pitched the rest of the game for the Mets, allowing only one hit and striking out two. Stats of note...every Cotuit hitter who came to the plate on Friday was charged with an official time at bat; there were no walks, hit batsmen, or sacrifices...Mets outfielder Mike Brown played his first game since being sidelined with a knee injury from the June 14 game at Cotuit...the stat from last night's game about the winning team coming to the plate fewer times held true again on Friday. Orleans receives heroics, tops Mets in 11 story from 6/24/01; posted on 6/25/01 at 11:27 EDT --ORLEANS--The Orleans Cardinals took two extra frames to send the Mets home without a win. A three-run homer in the eleventh inning by Cardinals right fielder Tyler Davidson gave Orleans a 5-2 win over Hyannis on Sunday night at damp Eldredge Park. The Mets had received perfection from their pitching staff from the sixth to the tenth inning. Justin Lord, who had already pitched a 1-2-3 tenth, came back on for the eleventh. Shortstop Joseph Peer (Austin Peay) was hit with a pitch to lead off the inning, and was followed by a bunt single from Russ Adams. Two outs were quickly had, however, and only Davidson could prevent the game from entering the twelfth inning. He lined a 2-1 pitch deep into the parking lot beyond the left field fence to bring home the winning run and two others for the victory. Lord (0-1) was given the loss after allowing his first home run of the season. In his 1 2/3 innings, he struck out three and walked none. A pair of fine outings were spun before him by starter Justin Taylor and reliever Kevin Ool. Taylor pitched for 7 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking zero while scattering four hits and giving up one earned run. Ool faced the minimum of five batters in his 1 2/3 innings, striking out all but one of them. Cardinal pitching was equally as dominant on the evening. Starter Joey Bateman went 6 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one. His relief came from former Gatemen pitcher Rhett Parrott (Georgia Tech), who allowed only one single in 4 1/3 innings, also striking out six and walking one. He earned the win in his first outing of the year to move to 1-0. Orleans put its runs up first, scoring two in the second inning. Troy Caradonna (Duke) led off the inning with a single into left-center, and was moved over to second when a fielder's choice play was muffed for an error. A sacrifice moved Caradonna and Chad Coder (Clemson) into scoring position, where they were picked up by catcher Derek Norman (Furman) with a base hit into short right field. The Mets took a few innings longer, but managed to tie it up by the seventh inning. The first run was scored by L.J. Biernbaum, whose opposite-field homer to left was his first of the year. In the seventh, Mario Garza (Stanford) started the inning with an infield hit, and pinch-runner Mike Brown took his place. Brown moved to second on a walk to Jason Perry, and to third on a perfect bunt single down the third-base line by Cameron Coughlan. With two outs in the inning, Bateman was replaced with Parrott. Parrott made his only real mistake of the game here, issuing a bases-loaded walk to Kyle Frank to tie the game. Stats of note...the "K" ruled the game; there were 26 strikeouts in the game, 14 by Mets pitchers and 12 by Cardinals pitchers...thanks to Ken Farrar for noticing this one: Jason Perry was the only Mets hitter who did not fan in the game (there were only two Orleans batters who avoided a strikeout)...the Hyannis pitching staff has not issued a walk in 24 innings.
