Mets strand thirteen, can't get by Bourne story from 7/1/00; posted on 7/1/00 at 23:53 EDT --HYANNIS--The Mets put out their highest hit total of the year but failed to bring their runners home, falling to Bourne on Saturday at McKeon Field, 5-3. With the win, Bourne pulls one point ahead of Hyannis for fourth place in the Western Division. The game saw several lead changes; neither starting pitcher had a decision for their team. Bourne's starter, Justin Pope, was relieved in the seventh after giving up twelve hits and (amazingly) allowing no runs while striking out eight. The lead he left the game with vanished in the seventh inning. Hyannis' Jason Bush was in line for the loss until the seventh. He was pulled in the eighth after allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Bourne took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Kevin Youkilis reached base on a single and moved to second when Jon Benick (Virginia) reached on an error. They were moved to scoring position by Dwight Edge's (Tampa) sacrifice bunt. Youkilis scored on a groundout, and Benick scored on a hit by Kevin Kelly (Duke). Mike Rodriguez made it 3-0 for the Braves in the fifth inning, reaching base on a single and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Youkilis. The Mets answered back in the seventh inning. The first two batters, Brendan Harris and Brian Stavisky, reached base on an error and a double to right-center that made it halfway up the wall. A new pitcher came in, only to walk his first hitter, Justin Loop. A double down the left-field line by Ryan Barthelemy picked up Harris and Stavisky. A perfectly-executed suicide squeeze by Ken Riley scored Loop to tie the game at 3-3. The lead was taken back by the Braves in the next half-inning. Benick reached base by being hit with a pitch, and scored on Futrell's second hit. Futrell scored on a double by Matt Serafini (Evansville) to form the final score of 5-3. The winner for Bourne was Billy Biggs (1-0), who allowed two hits and one run in two innings of relief. Josh Brey pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season. Dan Core (0-4) allowed those two runs in the eighth and was therefore the losing pitcher. Half of his losses have now come against Bourne. Stats of note...the Mets had five more hits on Saturday than in Friday's 13-inning game and four less runs...Brian Stavisky and Ryan Barthelemy each had three hits on Friday, two singles and a double apeice...Half of Bourne's six wins this year have been against the Mets. Mets come back to beat the Whitecaps story from 7/2/00; posted on 7/2/00 at 23:59 EDT --HARWICH--The Brewster Whitecaps were unable to hold off another 15-hit attack by the Mets and lost Sunday at Cape Cod Tech Field, 9-5. The potent Hyannis offense came back from a three-run deficit by the sixth inning and added four additional runs by the end of the game. The Mets scored two runs in the first inning as was necessary; every game the Mets have won has involved some production in the first inning. Mike Scott had a double and scored on a double by Ryan Barthelemy, who in turn scored on a double by Jon Henry Kail. Of the four Hyannis doubles, three came in the first inning. Brewster looked to match Hyannis in the second inning. They tied the score in the second on back-to-back home runs to left field by Josh Persell and Todd Faulkner (Auburn). Persell was a triple short of the cycle at the end of the game, adding a run-scoring double in the three-run fourth. Faulkner also had a hit in the fourth. The following batter in that inning, Murph Norris, hit a double to left-center. Persell scored on the hit, but Faulkner was cut down at the plate. Hyannis had two runners on in the sixth when, down 5-2, Brian Stavisky hit a ground ball that hopped over the first baseman's head for a single and two RBI. He and Ken Riley (who had three hits in the game) scored on a hit by Jamie Athas. Two runs were added in the next inning on a towering home run to left by Kail, his first of the season. The hitting leaders for Hyannis were Barthelemy (4-for-5), Kail (3 RBI), Stavisky (2 hits/2 RBI), and Riley (3-for-5). The Mets had the same number of hits as they did on Saturday, but scored six more runs and stranded four less runners. They also faced a team that they had already won against (back on June 23). Jeff Bruksch (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the Mets after a six-inning outing. He allowed the five Brewster runs and scattered eight hits, but struck out six while walking only one. Matt Lynch pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs and only one hit. Matt Sollie (1-1) was Brewster's starting pitcher and losing pitcher. Sollie (NC State) threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs and nine hits. The Whitecaps' other two pitchers each allowed at least one run and two hits in no more than two innings. Stats of note...the Mets were fourth in the league in hitting heading into Sunday's game and expect to pass Harwich for third after their second straight 15-hit output...with Kail's home run, the Mets now have as many home runs as they have triples...Stavisky and Barthelemy both are coming off consecutive multi-hit games, having a combined total of twelve hits in the two games. Mets stopped one run short of comeback story from 7/3/00; posted on 7/3/00 at 23:55 EDT --HYANNIS--The Harwich Mariners pulled out their second one-run victory against the Mets on Monday at McKeon Field. They stranded the potential winning run at first base and defeated Hyannis, 6-5. The starting pitching was the strongest aspect of each team's game, even though neither pitcher had a decision in the end. Matt Coenen pitched the first seven innings for Hyannis, allowing four hits and one run while striking out seven. He was relieved only because he was fatigued after throwing 117 pitches. The Mariners' Jon McDonald threw for six innings with three strikeouts and three runs on seven hits. Harwich's leading hitters were John Cole, Kelly Shoppach (Baylor), and Adam Stern (Nebraska-Lincoln). Cole had two hits and two pivotal RBI in the ninth. Shoppach had a solo home run in the fourth inning. Stern scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Also, Todd Leathers (Winthrop) contributed a ninth-inning double and score a run later in that inning. The Mets scored three runs in the sixth inning. Ryan Barthelemy reached base on a walk, and moved to second on a hit by Mike Rabelo. Brian Stavisky's double scored Barthelemy and a sacrifice fly by Jon Henry Kail scored Rabelo. Stavisky came in when Steve Holm produced a hit. Holm started the ninth inning rally for Hyannis. Down 6-3, he reached base with a walk and moved to second on another walk, this one to Jamie Athas. Mike Scott's single moved them into scoring position and loaded the bases for Brendan Harris, the go-ahead run. Harris hit a grounder that squeezed past the infielders for a single and scored Holm. Barthelemy hit a sacrifice fly that brought Athas in. Unfortunately, the last batter flied out to end the game, leaving the tying run 180 feet away. Kevin Downes (Amherst) won the game for Harwich, moving to 3-0 after pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Jay Belflower pitched the last two innings and barely received his first save of the year. The losing pitcher for the Mets was Darryl DeSalvo (0-1), who allowed the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Stats of note...both games against Harwich this season have been lost by a one-run margin (1-0, June 16 at Harwich)...all the runs in the past two games have been earned...three out of five of Hyannis' runs on Monday were scored by batters who reached base on walks. Mets edge out Cotuit for second win against Kettleers story from 7/4/00; posted on 7/4/00 at 22:36 EDT --COTUIT--The Hyannis Mets came into Lowell Park on the Fourth of July and defeated the Cotuit Kettleers to take the lead in the season series of this heated rivalry, 2-0. The Mets won a 3-2 game in what might have been the most exciting contest of the season. Contrary to the fireworks demonstrations taking place throughout the nation, no batted balls were rocketed out of the park. The two teams combined for nine hits and three earned runs. The pitchers controlled the flow of the game, with a combined twelve strikeouts and five walks. Greg Conden (1-0) picked up his first win in eight appearances and two starts. He threw six innings, striking out seven, allowing two runs (none earned), and giving up three hits. The save was credited to Jake Alley, who only allowed one hit in three innings. Alley retired the first eight batters he faced, but gave up a double to Rob Cofiero (Villanova) in the ninth with two out. He stranded Cofiero by striking out John Nathans (Richmond) to end the game. The complete-game effort of Zach Minor (Fresno State) was only enough to give him a loss. His 136-pitch outing saw five hits, three earned runs, four strikeouts, and one walk. Minor (0-3) even did better than his line suggested; the first two hits he surrendered were both infield hits. Hyannis struck in the first inning with back-to-back infield hits by Greg Miller and Mike Scott to lead off the game. A passed ball brought Miller home, and Mike Scott scored on a fielder's choice by Justin Loop. Loop was the offensive star of the game, adding a double in the sixth that scored Brendan Harris. Cotuit's only runs came off a wacky play in the fifth inning. Nathans reached base on a hit to start the inning. Chris Russ (Texas A&M) attempted to move Nathans over to second with a sacrifice bunt. An errant throw to first by Conden flew down the right-field foul line, allowing Nathans to score from first and moving Russ to third. First baseman Ryan Barthelemy finally reached the ball and attempted to throw out Russ at third. That throw also got away, and Russ scored on a typical Little League-ish bunt home run. Stats of note...the Mets' defense pulled itself together after that throw-around, since Alley's eight consecutive batters retired were all taken care of in the field...Hyannis is now only one point behind Cotuit in the Western Division...on the 224th anniversary of our nation's independence, look at the final linescores: HYANNIS

Sunset buys time and a late win for the Mets story from 7/6/00; posted on 7/6/00 at 23:57 EDT --HYANNIS--The Mets had their second extra-inning game of the year under the twilight at McKeon Field, pulling out a 3-2 win over the Chatham A's in 11 innings. The winning run was made possible by a bright sunset reflecting off of high clouds to create just enough light to play the final inning. The score was locked at 2-2 going into the bottom of the 11th inning. The umpires ruled that there was just enough light to complete the frame, even though the automated lights in the adjacent parking lot were starting to come on. Brendan Harris, who also had a double in the fourth, reached on a two-out walk. He stole second base, and moved to third on a passed ball. On the very next pitch, Ryan Barthelemy hit a line drive into center field to bring in Harris and win the game in dramatic fashion. Matt Lynch (1-0) won his first game of the season after pitching only 2/3 innings and inducing a double play. Tim Cunningham was the starter for Hyannis. He struggled early, allowing 13 batters to reach base in the first four innings, but ended up scattering six hits in six innings with one earned run and five strikeouts. Dan Core had his best outing of the year in relief of Cunningham, allowing only two hits in 4 1/3 innings and striking out four. Chatham's Pete Montrenes (Southern Cal) got the start and pitched eight innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out seven in his 127-pitch outing. The loss was handed to newcomer Tanner Eriksen (Southern Cal), who still managed to strike out five and only allowed two hits in three innings. At one point, Montrenes and Eriksen combined to retire fifteen Mets batters consecutively. Hyannis was led by the offense of Brian Stavisky, who hit his first home run of the season. His line-drive blast towards the scoreboard in right field tied the score at one in the second inning. He also drove in Harris to tie the score at two in the fourth inning. To accentuate his day, all of these events took place on his twentieth birthday with his family in attendance! Todd Linden (Washington) was 3-for-4 for the A's, raising his already team-leading batting average to .370. Leadoff hitter Drew Meyer (South Carolina) scored both of Chatham's runs, and was driven in by Alfredo Lugo (Georgia College) on both occasions. Stats of note...the only other player on the Mets besides Stavisky to play on his birthday was Darryl DeSalvo, who pitched one scoreless inning June 23 in a 7-2 win against Brewster. The third Met to have a birthday during the season, Matt Carson, was not in the lineup on his July 1 birthday...the Mets committed four errors in Thursday's game, the most in one game since June 17...the game lasted three hours and eight minutes, the longest game at McKeon Field all year. No amount of weather stops Mets from winning third straight story from 7/7/00; posted on 7/8/00 at 10:07 EDT --FALMOUTH--At chilly Guv Fuller Field Friday night before a crowd that swelled to 200 and dwindled to 30, the Hyannis Mets defeated the Falmouth Commodores by a score of 9-5 to win their third consecutive game. The Mets produced nine runs on ten hits with five timely walks. Out of the nine runs that were scored, only three of the runners reached base on a hit. The others got on due to three walks, a fielder's choice, an error, and a passed ball on a strikeout. Seven out of the nine runs were earned, and there were eight RBI by Mets hitters. Leading the way for Hyannis were big hitters Brian Stavisky, who had two ground-rule doubles and two RBI, and Ryan Barthelemy, who scored three runs. Catcher Ken Riley reached base every time he came to bat, going 2-for-2 with two walks. Jon Henry Kail had two RBI on a sacrifice fly and a groundout. The game was tied at five in the ninth inning with curfew time approaching fast. Hyannis responded by producing more than enough offense. Riley led the inning off with a walk, moved to second on a Greg Miller hit, and moved to third when Mike Scott reached with an error. The only potential RBI which nobody could take credit for ended up being the game-winner, as the third pitch to Brendan Harris went wild, scoring Riley. Harris had a two-RBI hit on the next pitch, extending his hitting streak to fifteen games. Falmouth's corresponding offensive statistics were far more unusual than Hyannis'. They scored five runs on four hits with seven walks. Only one of their runners that scored reached base on a hit; the others reaching on three walks and a sacrifice. Three out of the five runs were earned, and there were four RBI by Commodore hitters. For the Commodores, the run that was not batted in came on a steal of home plate. That steal was pulled off by Billy Jacobson (Stanford), who came in on a first-and-third double steal play in the fifth inning. Two more runs were added in the seventh inning on a sky-high home run to right field by Luke Scott, his second home run off the Mets in two games. Matt Lynch (2-0) pitched two innings of relief and earned the win for Hyannis. He struck out five, and only gave up one hit, which happened to be Scott's rocket. Lynch relieved starter Justin Taylor, who allowed three runs on two hits with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Other relievers for the Mets were Darryl DeSalvo, who pitched a scoreless ninth, and John Birtwell, who struck out the only two batters he faced. Vince Serafini (Evansville) was the losing pitcher for Falmouth in a four-inning relief effort. He allowed four hits and four runs while striking out six. Falmouth's starter, Ben Keiter (Wichita State), was pulled from the game after throwing 98 pitches in five-plus innings. Keiter surrendered five runs on six hits with five strikeouts. The game was delayed one hour and ten minutes from its start time due to a thunderstorm and its effects on the field that needed to be cleaned up. Once it was apparent that the game would be started, a large crowd came out of their cars and into the bleachers. Far-off lightning strikes managed to scare off most of the crowd by the third inning. If the imposing clouds weren't enough, the temperature dropped thirty degrees in a matter of hours and was chilled further by a frigid Arctic wind. Nearly all of the spectators who neglected their personal warmth when leaving for the game found themselves gone by the fourth inning. However, Hyannis' hot bats were keeping everyone warm by the end of the game! Stats of note...the Mets pitchers combined for fourteen strikeouts; they managed to strike out every member of the Commodore lineup at least once...Hyannis has done something twice in a row that it hadn't been able to do all season - they won a game without scoring at least one run in the first inning...DeSalvo made his team-leading ninth appearance, and lowered his ERA to 1.64. One extra inning yields one extra run for Mets story from 7/8/00; posted on 7/9/00 at 15:57 EDT --HYANNIS--The Mets outlasted the Wareham Gatemen at McKeon Field, winning in ten innings by a score of 4-3. With the win, the Mets passed Cotuit for third in the Western Division and grew closer to the division-leading Gatemen. Wareham came into the game with a league-best 15-7 record and the best numbers in both hitting and pitching. These numbers took a beating, as Wareham pitching surrendered twelve walks and eight hits to Hyannis and Gatemen hitters could muster only three hits. By contrast, the Mets remained consistent with their play of late. Hyannis had eight hits and the pitchers struck out seven in their fourth straight win. The Mets were led by the offense of Brendan Harris and Greg Miller and the pitching tandem of Jeff Bruksch and Matt Coenen. Harris and Miller both contributed two hits and two walks, scoring three runs between them. Bruksch was the starting pitcher, allowing the three hits all in one inning and retiring nine in a row immediately afterwards. Coenen (3-0) picked up the win after pitching the final two innings. He allowed no hits and pitched a perfect tenth inning. Wareham would not have gone into extra innings with the Mets if not for the efforts of second baseman Mike Fontenot (Louisiana State). He scored twice in the game, reaching on a walk and hit. He came in on a balk and a throwing error, respectively. He also stole three bases in his two trips around the bases. A double by Brian Barre (Southern Cal) produced the only RBI for the Gatemen. The losing pitcher for the Gatemen was Lance Cormier (Alabama), whose control problem essentially handed the game away. Pitching in the bottom half of the tenth inning, Cormier (1-3) walked the bases loaded with one out and the threw a wild pitch, allowing the game-winning run to score. Rhett Parrott (Georgia Tech) was Wareham's starter; he allowed two earned runs on serven hits and five walks while striking out four in six innings of work. Stats of note...the Mets are 5-2 in the month of July, and have gone 9-4-1 since starting the season 1-8...Saturday's game marked the third consecutive three-hour game for the Mets...Hyannis is 3-1-1 in games that have lasted over three hours. Harwich won on an always-successful combination of productive hitting, impressive fielding, and formidable pitching. They manufactured eight hits, scoring their runs in pairs, and turned two double plays in the final two innings. The Mariners' offense was fueled by shortstop Steve Daniel (Tennessee) and catcher Eliot Joyner (Oklahoma). Daniel had three RBI on two hits, including a home run to left field in the third inning. Joyner was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. The winning pitcher was starter R. D. Spiehs (Nebraska), who pitched the first six innings in the win. Spiehs (3-1) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four. The save was credited to Jason Colson (Winthrop) after he pitched the last three innings for Harwich. Hyannis produced seven hits in the game, four of them contributed by Brian Stavisky. Stavisky had a hit every time up, but was never in position for an RBI and never came in to score. Mike Scott added a double and scored on a hit by Jamie Athas. Jason Bush falls to 0-3 with the loss, falling in his second attempt at Whitehouse Field. He only lasted 4 1/3 innings, surrnedering four runs on five hits. Jake Alley relieved Bush for the remainder of the game, striking out four and giving up one earned run. Stats of note...several streaks were snapped at the game, such as the Mets' four-game winning streak, a string of three games that lasted over three hours (this game went two hours and fourty minutes), and Brendan Harris' sixteen-game hitting streak...by the end of the game, two Mariners players had as many stolen bases as the entire Hyannis Mets team...Harwich handed losses to the Mets on both ends of the four-game winning streak. Packed house watches Mets drop one to Brewster story from 7/11/00; posted on 7/11/00 at 22:51 EDT --HYANNIS--The Mets lost to the Brewster Whitecaps Tuesday by a score of 7-4, playing in front of a crowd of nearly 1,000 spectators, many of whom were on hand to watch recording artist Carly Simon throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Hyannis loses its second straight game and its first to Brewster in three contests. The Whitecaps' offense bloomed latein the game, scoring six runs in the last two innings. The first two runs came on a home run by Josh Persell (Southern Cal) in the eighth inning. A Mike Rouse (Cal State-Fullerton) triple and a hit by Steve Stanley (Notre Dame) scored two additional runs in that inning. The ninth inning saw two walks, two hits, and two more runs. The Mets tied the game at one in the third inning on Jamie Athas' first home run of the year. The following inning, Brian Stavisky had a hit and moved to third on a botched pickoff play. He later scored on a Ken Riley single to take the lead. Athas and Greg Miller each reached base on singles in the eighth inning and scored on a hit by Brendan Harris, who was stranded at third base at the end of the inning while representing the tying run. Rallying behind the strong starting pitching of Matt Coenen, who allowed one earned run on five hits in six innings, the Mets had the lead from the fourth inning to the eighth inning. Dan Core (0-5) pitched a strong seventh inning, but got into trouble in the eighth. He walked the leadoff hitter, and gave up Persell's home run. He was immediately pulled for Matt Lynch, who did no better. Lynch allowed four runs on four hits, further helping the Whitecaps to victory with a run-scoring wild pitch and a balk. Core ended up with the loss after surrendering the hit that made the score 3-2. Brewster's winner was starter Chad Clark (Southern Cal). He pitched the first 7 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking none in a ten-hit effort. The save went to Dan Rich (Stanford), who was credited with his fifth save of the season after allowing no hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Simon, a resident of Martha's Vineyard, was on hand for the game to kick off a promotional tour for her new album, "The Bedroom Tapes". She threw out the first pitch and then stayed to watch the first four innings of the game, signing autographs and conducting interviews with the local media. When she left, the Mets had the lead. This would be food for thought, except that Hyannis hung on for four additional innings! Stats of note...11 out of Stavisky's 18 hits this season have been extra-base hits, including nine doubles...the CCBL record for doubles is 19, set by Walt Weiss of the Gatemen in 1984 with an aluminum bat and later tied by Hyannis' Dan Olson in 1994 with a wooden bat...the grand prize in the 50-50 raffle on Tuesday was $240, one half of the largest pot collected at McKeon Field this year. Birtwell, Conden outduel Braves staff story from 7/12/00; posted on 7/12/00 at 23:32 EDT --BOURNE--In a strong pitcher's duel spoiled only by fielding errors and occasional walks, the Mets pulled out a 3-1 victory over the Bourne Braves on Wednesday at Coady Field. With the win, the Mets completed their first win over the last-place Braves in four attempts. The pitching tandem of starter John Birtwell and reliever Greg Conden were the driving force in defeating the Braves. Birtwell (1-3) earned his first win of the season after an outing of 7 1/3 innings. He had a no-hitter through four innings, which ended in the fifth on an infield hit. He ended his game with four hits, one unearned run, six strikeouts, three walks, and four hits. Conden completed the game for Birtwell and picked up his first save in nine appearances, allowing no hits and striking out two. The loss was handed to Bourne starter Scott Light (Elon), who falls to 0-3 after allowing two unearned runs in seven innings. Light walked six and struck out five, only allowing two hits. The lone earned run in the game was surrendered in the eighth inning by reliever Luke DeBold (Miami FL). Hyannis broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning. With one out, Mike Scott reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second, and later moved to third on a wild pitch. Mike Rabelo and Jamie Athas, the next two batters, received bases on balls. Brendan Harris followed with a fly ball to center field that would have been the third out if it was not misplayed by center fielder Dwight Edge. Scott and Rabelo scored, but Athas was thrown out at the plate on a controversial play where it appeared that he evaded the tag. Another run was added the following inning; Justin Loop led off with a double and scored on a single by Matt Carson. Bourne's only run was scored in the bottom of the eighth by Ryan Riley. He reached base and moved to second on simultaneous fielding and throwing errors by Loop, the third baseman. He scored on a hit by the following batter, second baseman J.D. Alleva. Alleva also had a double in the sixth, representing the only Braves hitter to have two hits in the game. The game, which was scheduled to begin at 4:45, actually started eighteen minutes late at 5:03. The awkward starting time was made in an attempt to avoid the famous Coady Sun Delay, when the setting sun spends about thirty minutes in the direct line-of-sight of the batter, catcher, and plate umpire. The delay hit at 7:29, and play resumed sixteen minutes later at 7:45 with the sun still peeking over the horizon. Stats of note...no half-inning for the Braves lasted longer than five batters, while the Mets had consecutive six-batter frames in the seventh and eighth innings...the Mets are now 4-3 in games when they score exactly three runs...Hyannis is 0-1 when Carly Simon throws out the first pitch. The exciting rivalry produced yet another thrilling game Friday at McKeon Field, a game won by Hyannis with two out in the bottom of the ninth by a score of 7-6. The Mets had the lead in the game heading into the ninth inning. The leadoff batter was walked, and Darryl DeSalvo (the eventual winning pitcher) came in to pitch. The next four batters walked, struck out, singled, and struck out to bring up Daylan Holt (Texas A&M). Holt walked to bring leadoff hitter John Nathans in to score. DeSalvo struck out the last batter to strand the go-ahead run and allow the Mets to come to the plate. Brendan Harris was hit with a pitch to start the inning, and moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Mike Rabelo. The following batter, Brian Stavisky, was intentionally walked to bring up Matt Carson, who flew out to left field for the second out. Ryan Barthelemy came to the plate next and hit a 1-1 pitch into short center field, scoring Harris and ending the game. Dan Eisentrager (0-1) got the loss in his first decision of the year. He only allowed one hit (the game-winning hit) and gave up only one run (the game-winning run). He also struck out three and pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings to start his outing. The starter for Cotuit, Shawn Weaver (Old Dominion), allowed six runs and struck out three in five innings. DeSalvo improves to 1-1, giving up no earned runs since the one that scored in his ninth inning belonged to the other reliever, Matt Lynch. Lynch pitched two-plus innings with only two hits and one walk. Starting pitcher Justin Taylor threw 112 pitches in six-plus innings, striking out six and allowing five runs. Cotuit struck first with a four-run second inning. RBI were contributed by Chris Russ with a hit, Mike Hook with a bases-loaded walk, and Brian Wright with a hit. Of these, the most successful hitter on the night was Russ, who added a line-drive solo home run to left field in the seventh. The undisputed leader of Hyannis' offense was Barthelemy, who went 3-for-5 with the game-winning single, a double to the deepest part of center field, and a three-run blast to right in the third inning that gave the Mets a 5-4 lead. Another big contributer was Stavisky, who continued his recent tear by going 2-for-4 with an intentional walk. Stavisky went into the night at fourth place in the league in hitting. The leading run scorer for the Mets was Harris, who crossed home three times in five appearances.
